I heard a reporter a few weeks ago suggest that Barack Obama’s ideas were not easy for the ordinary person to grasp and was left to assume that he’s so much smarter than the rest of us that we shouldn’t question his motives or policy’s. My first reaction was that I have in fact heard this before when they used to speak about Clinton and it got me to thinking about the whole intelligence, democrat vs republican bit and ultimately the media’s betrayal of it.
In the days of Clinton reporters were astounded just how genius Clinton was. His campaign staff was quoted as having to go through “great pains to dumb down Clinton” so he could connect with the American people. US News and World Report recounted the Herculean effort staffers undertook to “conceal [Clinton's] his towering intellect“. (The same intellect that had him depositing DNA on the dress of some chubby adolescent home wrecker) Hillery was called the “smartest woman in the world“,(yet not smart enough to know she was sharing his penis with another woman) “the woman who knew too much” and the morning shows reasoned that “her knowledge of the issues intimidated voters“.
Of course it’s been a long time since any democrat has stood alone and been accused of stupidity in the mainstream media. The lefts rendition of history names numerous intelligent democrats; FDR JFK and of course Bill Clinton. Jimmy Carter, Walter Mondale, Bill Bradley and and Michael Dukakis were all hailed as highly intelligent as well.
During the debate with Regan, Carter admitted he had sought advice from his daughter Amy concerning nuclear weapons and why not? I’d be willing to bet the average American has never utilized this untapped “youth” resource in say; questions concerning finance, contracts and lawsuits which is why the average American doesn’t get to be President right?
Michael Dukakis was apparently so smart he was unaware of his wife’s 26 year old addiction to diet pills. (Apparently there was no one around to “dumb him down” to take notice.)
Walter Mondale was too intelligent for his own good and in the middle of a campaign he thought it would be a good idea to inform voters he was going to raise their taxes as a strategy to win the election.
Bill Bradley earned the unofficial nick-name “cerebral” because so few reporters could resist using the term as a way to define his superior intellect. Then it was discovered he got a 485 on his verbal SAT’s. (Bush received a score of 566) Naturally when this was revealed the Times had to do a story on how the SAT’s was not an exceptional predictor of success as a way to play the whole affair off.
As if to prove the Times piece correct Al Gore made the argument that the internal combustion engine should be banned and during the campaign against Bush, paid feminist a group $15,000 a month to teach him how to be more of a man. (Gore’s verbal SAT was 625) All the while claiming Love Story was about him and Tipper, he invented the Internet and the lie that his mother sang the Union Label song (composed when little Al Gore was a tender 27 years old in 1975. )
Note that Bush’s gaffes were promptly reported as evidence that he was not the best man for the job while Gore’s (whoppers) were conveniently overlooked and there were dozens of articles stating what was obvious only to liberal democrats, Bush was another dumb republican. One story wrote Gore was only a “few IQ points from genius” and “the smartest kid in the class” while Bush endured “not the sharpest knife in the drawer” and “he lacks gravitas“.
If education plays any role in the intelligence debate, make note that Bush received his MBA from Harvard while Gore failed out of divinity school failing five of his eight classes and dropped out of Vanderbilt University Law School where Gore’s intelligence apparently couldn’t bridge the gap between him and his professors when he claimed the Biblical story of Cain’s slaying of Able was about “pollution“. (?)
His book “Earth in the Balance” Gore suggests God was pissed off not because of murder, envy or coveting his brother relationship with God….no, Cain had “defiled the ground” presumably with brain matter, intestines and a few gallons of blood from his brothers crippled body.
Add up all of Al Gores genius and he still can’t remember how his subpoenaed White House E-mails got lost. The inventor of the Internet explained that he was “not an expert on computers“. When questioned by Fox News on the exposed illegal fund raising at the Buddhist Temple Gore said that what he had learned was “we need campaign finance reform” as if by virtue of breaking the law he was in a better position to reform it. Of course his discovery of “Love Canal” after Carter had declared it a national disaster, his fathers stand on Civil Rights (legislation his father voted against), and his claim of co-sponsoring McCain/Feingold (he never served in Congress with Senator Feingold) only proves Bush is an idiot.
The Media during the Bush Gore campaign brushed off Gore’s exaggerations, misquotes or lies as CBS only reported Gores Internet statement once and then claimed Gore was being dominated by trivial issues while information Americans really wanted to know about were being ignored. Eventually the mainstream press would criticizes themselves for being so tough on him while the reality was their phony self criticism only made him out to be the victim.
When ABC reported Gores claim of inventing the Internet they immediately accused the Bush campaign of “going negative“.
Love Canal was explained away as an example not of how difficult a time Gore had in telling the truth but “how Gore couldn’t get a fair shake from the Media.” Addressing a high school class he claimed to have noticed Love Canal from a letter sent by a girl in Toone Tennessee who had concerns about toxic waste. Gore claimed he called for a congressional investigation in searching for other such sites where he then discovered the canal in upstate New York. Since it had already been declared a disaster by Carter the media came to Gores rescue with such headlines as; “Gore more victimized than guilty of falsehoods“. His Internet claim was treated as much the same when “Slates” Mickey Kaus declared his misstatement was “minor and excusable“.
Bush of course didn’t enjoy the same treatment. When he was asked about the dragging death of James Byrd in Jasper Texas, Bush said that all 3 responsible would be paying the ultimate penalty which was of course wrong. Two of the three would receive a sentence of death and Bush was chastised for it as if he had personally pardoned the ring leader himself.
The fact was Shawn Allen Berry only escaped execution in Texas because the jury couldn’t definitively prove that he had a history of being racist. Never the less democrats set about by giving the perception that Bush was weak on race based crime and by refusing to enact “hate crime” legislation. (A law that increases sentencing if your found to be motivated racially when committing a crime) In Texas and across the Nation the media and African American groups tried to give the perception that Bush was a racist by failing to change the law.
Bush too was asked to name the leaders of India, Pakistan, Chechnya and Taiwan by a Boston based radio political corespondent Andy Hiller where Bush could only name one and described another and the Media went wild. Meanwhile Gore nearly choked to death on Diet Coke when asked by a reporter whether Bush was “to dumb” for the job as President, he refused to answer while the tape was rolling then lost to the same dumb guy making him the first incumbent President or Vice President to do so. During the campaign Gore couldn’t identify a bust of Washington on a trip to Monticello but naturally no one bothered to report that so few are aware of Gore ignorence.
The only “fair game” when questioning a Presidents intelligence is when a republican occupies the White House. The stupid republican / intelligent democrat myth lives on through the media, weekly periodicals and newspapers by glossing over democrat spoofs and making republican mistakes front page items. It’s well documented by the mainstream media that republicans continue to support people who are stupider than the one before while democrat choices are so unbelievably intelligent they need help just to communicate with the ordinary citizen.
The same held true for Nixon, Ford and lets not forget how Regan at the time was just the luckiest dumb guy ever to have occupied the Oval Office. When republicans won back the House in the early 90′s it wasn’t portrayed as educated voting but “angry White males” that threw the election. Dan Quayle is still viewed by the average run of the mill citizen, thanks to left wing sources as a dolt and when he made his statement about Murphy Brown the press enjoyed years of jocularity at his expense. 15 years would pass before a study supporting Quayle’s statement where he denounced single parent child rearing yet the late night shows, Hollywood personalities and op ed columns wouldn’t dedicate any time in correcting the record. The fact is the mainstream media has become the lefts Kudzu Vine of the democratic party and their own special interest with their lack of objectivity whose sole purpose is to support liberal progressive issues. Is there any other way to explain the lefts attack of Fox news but to conclude that the left would like to silence dissenting opinion?
We witness the same behavior today with the perception of Sarah Palin, Bobby Jingle and groups like the Tea Party. Racist, stupid, extremist and a myriad of other red flag descriptions can all be found within the same sentence containing their names all designed for a single purpose; to give the appearance of being so out of touch with average American and giving those who manage to make a connection with the right feel out of place.
Regan may outlive leftist hatred making him in their eyes one of the stupidest Presidents ever although it should be no surprise conservatives hail him as one of the best Presidents in recent memory. When “dunce”, “fuzzy headed politics” and “Reganomics” failed to sway public opinion the left changed their strategy before the 84 election by calling Regan senile. His afternoon power naps gave the left an excuse to question his capability as President and later after his affliction of Alzheimer’s the left didn’t let that go to waste either while they wondered out loud if the most powerful man in th world may have been running the country with the early affliction of the disease. The liberal joke of the day was; “Washington couldn’t tell a lie, Nixon couldn’t tell the truth and Regan couldn’t tell the difference” as a way of discrediting a man who won the cold war and piloted this nation into a booming economy. I personally would have like to have seen an encore between Regan and Red China. Of course Regan won both his election in a landslide which lends credence to the idea that Americans would rather have senile old men running the country over a democrat. This brings up the obvious question to democrats who claim to have their finger on the pulse of the nation; if they opposed Regan and his policies wouldn’t it make sense they simply aren’t in touch with America since so many supported Regan?
Some might say Bush (41) was only able to avoid the stereotype that “the only thing dumber than a former republican President is a current republican President” because Dan Quail made himself the whipping boy for the left. Of course when it became Bush (43)’s turn the left hailed him as some draft dodging frat boy born into privilege and stupider than Quayle and his father combined. Go back further and Ford was a dolt, Nixon betrayed the nation and was worthy of prison until Clinton broke the law and then the left suddenly became silent on a serious note about Nixon. Coolidge and Eisenhower suffered ridicule of leftist eggheads allegedly for not living up to the standards of FDR a man who spent 8 years trying to get us out of the depression and was caught with his pants down at Pearl Harbor. Where is the condemnation of Truman who got us into the Korean War and Kennedy’s failed Bay of Pigs invasion? Kennedy was oblivious to the Russians shipping ICBMs to Cuba until they were in place yet Bush should have known Islamic extremists were preparing to fly jets into selected targets?
The legend continues as the election of 2008 wore on. McCain (chosen by the left) was deemed as smart enough for the job until he picked the more conservative Palin and now that she has the attention of conservatives I wonder who will be the first to claim Palin is more stupid than George W Bush!? You can see the doubt questioning her intelligence all over the blogs, mainstream media and talking heads all the time. So how can it be that the republican candidate whose even stupider than all their predecessors win elections and just how much influence should the lefts opinion matter on the rights choosing of a candidate? It doesn’t and it shouldn’t.
So, is this some testament that republicans are as smart or smarter than their democrat counterparts? Hell no but to be force fed the media’s betrayal of democrats always being so vastly intelligent while republican’s, especially the ones the left doesn’t like are all stupid is condescending and childish.
